Drones have been part of our lives for nearly a decade now, and they’re only getting more powerful and sophisticated. In fact, some of the most impressive consumer drones on the market can fly for up to 30 minutes at a time.
Drones are one of the most exciting technologies of the past decade.
They’ve been used for everything from delivering pizzas to fighting fires, and they’re only getting better.
From a consumer perspective, drones have become incredibly affordable and easy to use — so much so that we can even get them as toys. But what do we want to see from drones in 2023? Here are five things:
1. Better safety features
Drones are becoming increasingly popular with consumers, but many people still don’t trust them or their operators. This is because of tragedies like drones crashing into buildings and injuring people, or contact between them and aircrafts (which has happened multiple times). It’s also because drones can be difficult to control and therefore pose a danger even when operated by professional pilots who know what they’re doing.
In order to combat this problem, we need better safety features built into drone software that will help protect both users and bystanders from injury or property damage caused by rogue drones flying around everywhere. We also need more awareness about how dangerous these devices can be — especially when flown by inexperienced operators — so that people don’t take unnecessary risks with their own lives or those around them just because they think drones are cool toys
2. More drones from well-known brands
Through the pandemic, some of our favorite brands have been regressing, but other companies are steadily growing stronger and more capable. One company that springs to mind is Hubsan; just a few years ago, they were making little toy drones, but today they sell respectable camera drones. The Hubsan Zino Pro is a good illustration, showing that Hubsan may eventually be able to compete with the DJI Mini range of drones thanks to its stabilized 4K footage and respectable flight duration.
Additionally, it is already known that Autel Robotics is developing new drones; more information is anticipated to become available in early January.
3. New competitors in the market for camera drones
There is opportunity for new players in the market as the world returns to normal, or at least a new normal. We anticipate toy-class manufacturers to produce higher-quality drones, and their commercial success should encourage other firms to follow suit.
4. Additional equipment
Everything will start with Remote ID modules. There is no getting around the fact that our current unmodified drone fleets will be grounded in 2023, therefore either we will all need to start hunting for new equipment or after-market accessories to allow Remote ID transmission for our aircraft. The majority of drone attachments are homemade, but by creating mounts and opening ports on our airframes, we’re also making room for new accessories.
In addition, the FAA now permits certified Part 107 pilots to fly at night, thus beacon lights are at least due for a return in favor.

While Part 107 pilots currently have access to night flights, we anticipate that hobby pilots may also receive this courtesy. Without a doubt, more training or certification would be necessary, but we do not see why a hobby pilot cannot adhere to the same regulations as a commercial pilot.
5. We apologize, no drone deliveries yet.
We do not anticipate real BVLOS flights in 2022, notwithstanding the improvements in BVLOS legislation. Without it, there wouldn’t be much space for drone delivery. As we’ve previously stated, it’s a rare circumstance when flying would be more efficient than just delivering the gift to your front door if the delivery pilot must be within visual range of it.

All in all, we anticipate that the consumer drone market will continue to grow slowly in 2022. However, we anticipate some incredible craft to appear on retail shelves.
